Thanks for listening! Here we’ll outline the requirements for producing shows, both DJ shows & Chat Shows. We understand that not all requests made are possible, so please ask your Portobello Radio contact for assistance with anything you can’t achieve on your own.
Production notes:
• All recorded material should peak at 0db wherever possible. We stream with a peak of -2.6db & will compress your audio file to the desired output. DJ’s take note, the peak we require is the top of the green LEDs, if your mix goes too far into the orange or even hits the red LEDs we might not be able to play it.
• We can use all types of audio files but ideally we’d like standard format audio files. Please send us either a high quality file output of 1411 kbps in WAV or AIF stereo format or standard quality file output of 320 kbps in MP3 stereo format.
• All shows are either 1 or 2 hours long, if your show overshoots that threshold we might fade it out.
• All shows must carry at least 2 Portobello Radio Idents (aural station identifications). You can download our station idents for use in your shows from our Assets page.
• Wear headphones while recording or streaming so you can properly hear your output, sometimes you or your guest can drift from the mic & the audio level drops, you’ll hear this if your wearing. headphones.
• Please send pre-recorded shows at least 2 hours before scheduled airing as we have to post-produce the audio file to oblige legal requirements before the scheduled air date.
• Avoid playing too many tracks by the same artist as this can contravene some global licensing laws
Legal notes:
• We do not operate a Pay To Play policy. By default, if you produce a show & Portobello Radio is the first to stream it, we have joint rights over that recording, we are co-producers. If you decide to share that recording with another platform, On Demand or streaming service, you must let us know first. The show must also contain at least 2 Portobello Radio Idents & publicised with a Portobello Radio logo & have the words Portobello Radio in the post or artwork. Visit our Assets page for these elements.
Other licensing arrangements can be made between the three parties that might negate these requirements. Please speak to your Portobello Radio contact to facilitate.
• We are happy to stream a show that has already been aired on another platform but you must tell us & make the other platform aware of this at least a week prior to our airing of that show.
• Ensure you have the permission of the people involved. From references within the spoken sections of your production to using photos of people in promotional material.
• Ensure you have permission to use logos & trademarks in your promotional materials.
• Ensure you have permission to use music or recordings. If you play music from music distribution platforms (Amazon, Spotify, Apple etc.) or you have purchased music from an independent distribution platform or shop (Beatport, Juno, Bandcamp, local Vinyl store etc.) then this is acceptable. If you play a recording of your friend’s band or PA or you have found a bootleg on Youtube, then ensure you have permission from the creator/s to use that recording before your show airs. Streaming or publishing to a podcast is legally known as ‘distributing’. Portobello Radio has licenses to distribute music & recordings licensed under the MCPS & PPL systems, most published recordings are licensed through these bodies.
• If you’re not sure of a fact or information, use the phrase ‘allegedly’ or ‘I believe’. Do not spread false information.
• Do not use defamatory language against a named person or organisation. You can state a conviction or legal notice against a named person or organisation, but make sure a court of law has published the information before you state it.
• Show sponsorship with brands that align with our own philosophy is encouraged. Please contact the Portobello Radio team with your inquiry.
